How well do you balance your work life with your personal life? Do you ever feel like you prioritize your work life over your personal life in too heavy handed of a way? Well you aren’t alone if you feel that way. Most people have an incredibly difficult time finding a good balance. I really think the big reason is that we get obsessed with our ambitions to succeed, provide, grow and make more money. Society puts an extreme amount of pressure on us to succeed. Having a family is stressful. So we churn and grind away. And we have trouble flipping the switch from work to play or family time. I know I am guilty of this. It may be Sunday, I may be at a movie, but often times I am gazing off thinking about what I “should be doing.” So how can we fix this?
A good idea to start is to make sure you create slots for downtime. Don’t just talk about having downtime with the family or your friends, or even just alone; actually schedule it. And live by the schedule as if it were your work schedule. Make sure you don’t feel guilty over it, either. Instead, look at it as helping your work by revitalizing you. If your brain never shuts down, it can never refuel. Let it refuel. Think of this time as good for you, as beneficial for your work, don’t think of it like it is time you are losing money because you aren’t working.
Try cutting out useless or non-beneficial items. Maybe you have a new project with a friend or co-worker. It sounded great at the start, but more and more you find it isn’t really working. Consider dropping it. Make sure your time is spent only on the things that matter so that you can have more time for yourself. Look at your current list of items you accomplish every day for work, do they all matter? Is there a way that structure could be changed so that things get more efficient?
Look into hiring help. You might think you can’t afford it, but you’d be surprised. Executive assistant sites, virtual assistants, are really great and useful. You can pay as you need. The thing is, what if you could cut out a list of task, would you make more money and grow your business more? Would you then also have more time for your family, or to go surfing or fishing? Sometimes balance means investing in it.
When you do have downtime, make sure you do something you enjoy. This will help prevent you from just thinking about the work you “should” be doing. If you enjoy the downtime, your focus should shift.
